It is a buyers market; however I am sure it will sell. I am in an older area of my town and it is a very quiet street. Not far from the historic area.

I have been checking out mobile home parks. And I have pretty much decided to go to a senior park. I think I can find a pretty decent home in my meager price range. There will activities for us old folks and I will meet people my own age. I think it will be a good fit. I just need a solid offer on this house.

I have been trying to weed out stuff I don't need and get rid of it or get it to the local Goodwill or Snowline Hospice Thrift Stores. I have been here 17 years and I have acquired a lot of stuff over the years plus I still have some of my daughters things. It will all work out in the end.

I spent the day gathering the paperwork to submit to my bank for the sale of my house. I am going through a short sale on the property. I tried to refinance my interest only loan and found that I was 40 thousand plus dollars in the hole. No one will refinance me. Perhaps it is best. I need less work and time consuming property.

I had one offer the day it was listed and second offer a few days later. We took the second offer since it was a bit more than the listed price. My house was listed at what I paid for it back in 1994. That is a crying shame. Now we will see if the bank will accept the offer.

I am not sure where I will be going. Hopefully not to an apartment. I am looking into buying a mobile home in a senior mobile home park; however financing will be hard at best. I need to come up with some money. Maybe I can rob a bank. Anything interesting?

I don't think I have done much of anything at all. I retired and thought I would get busy with art and that isn't the case. I have done a few things and shown a couple of times; but nothing relevant. My youngest daughter moved out and I changed her room into my studio. So much room and so little art done. I am not sure why. I have been working on reduction prints and registration. My latest adventure is in making a jig for my registration.

I used to eyeball the print when I applied each color. Hoping that my registration was on the mark. Of course it wasn't for the most part so the few that turned out well where a treasure. I have since discovered registration marks and/or a jig is the way to register the print for multiple colors. And supposedly less chance for error.

I went into the garage and found some old pieces of wood. I really don't care what it looks like just that it works. My base piece is 11x24 inches. A bit long for my printing but I didn't want to saw it since I really am limited to space for working in the garage. I usually do sawing outside and it was too cold. I found two pieces of 1&3/4 by 3/4 wood that I did cut off because it was way too long. .

The next step is attaching the smaller pieces to the side of the base in an L configuration. The smaller wood had holes in it so I figured it would just take a couple of screws on each piece and I'd be done. NOT SO! What I didn't figure is that I should have drilled a hole in the base piece so the screw would go in easier. Because what I did was strip the screw when I tried to drill it into the base and it was sticking up a quarter of an inch. As you can see I am quite handy in the garage with tools.

At this point I thought about getting my daughter to fix this mess; however I remembered that the Dremel I have will cut metal. I have never used it that way; but hey there is always a first time. so I proceeded to cut off the heads of the screws. Since the jig will never hold any weight I figured that the screws were in far enough.

I have created the jig and I am actually quite pleased with it and my handy woman work. I actually used it to make a reduction print. AND that is a story for tomorrow.

Thought for the day:
If a task has once begun.
Never leave it till it's done.
Be the labor great or small.
Do it well or not at all. ~Anon

(I am not sure about the well part but done is ok.)

Today

It has been awhile since I have posted here and longer since I have wanted too. I don’t think my friends and family realized how much I was depressed. After surviving breast cancer in 1994 I figured that all my cancer was over. I have been in a state of transition I guess. I am not sure if I developed a fatalistic view or just searching within me for answers.

In the mean time I decided to retire at the end of this year. At the time I filled out the paperwork I was happy and now I am having doubts about my reasons behind it. Of course hindsight is always clearer is it not? I think I thought I was going to die and wanted to live my last few months or years not working. Now I know that may or may not be the case and I need to ask myself: “What do I want to do going forward with my life?” I always thought it was art and I am sure it will be but……

That is the question right? What do I want? I don’t think I know. I am still trying to find the answer to that question.

2nd Saturday

I have a piece in the Born Free “Big Cat Little Cat” show at the Body Tribe in Sacramento. Last Saturday (2nd Saturday here in Sacramento) I braved the elements in Sacramento to be at the opening of the show. When I say I braved the elements I mean the crowds on Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Wow it is always busy downtown then. No place to park and people everywhere. I went around the block 5 times and then I decided to park illegally. At least I didn’t get a ticket.

I was very happy with my piece for the show. I did a two color reduction linoleum cut. It turned out pretty good. I am fairly new to printing and I still struggle with printing the lino cuts; but I enjoy it. My piece did not sell that night. They will leave up for the month and see if anyone is interested in it.

In case you are not aware Born Free USA is a not for profit organization pursuing causes in animal abuse and protection. The show is to raise money for their work. Each artist pledges a certain percentage of the sale to Born Free. I pledged 100% so they emailed me today to see if they could keep it and offer it in their online auction. I said sure. I hope it sells for them.

I also visited my Swell Sister Alyson’s show at the Luxe. Her style is changing a bit; but like it. She also had two kitten paintings in the Born Free show. Luckily for me she was only a block away. I didn’t have to move my car. I walked over to her show.

At 9 pm I met another sister Petra and her husband at A Bitchin Space Gallery to see Gayle Hart’s show. She is off the beaten path and I knew I could get a place to park. I am such a baby that way. She is a animal rights activist and her work has a lot of that interest in it.

It was a very busy night and I saw lots of great art.

Printmaking

Hey all here is another update. I've gotten caught up from the two separate weekends in Mendocino. Although they were weeks apart I finally put all the stuff back where it goes. At least in the correct room.

I am new to printmaking with only the last year under my belt in any sort of work. However on my last trip to Mendocino I took a workshop at the Mendocino Art Center (MAC) on photopolymer etching. I love this stuff. You have a steel plate covered in photopolymer coating and expose it to ultra violet light. We used a box at the workshop with tanning bed lights I think; however at home I used the SUN. Absolutely the Coolest!

For the process you create a transfer much like a negative; however what is black is black and what is white is white. Opposite of what a negative is in reality. I created mine on an overhead transparency. The ones they still use in some classrooms that are not completely digital.

At the workshop I came un-prepared (that is another story) and I created a very simple ink wash to learn the process. I copied the drawing onto the overheard transparency on the copy machine in the office.

Here is a picture of the drawing as well as the transparency, the plate, and the print.

By using the ink drawing I was experimenting with keeping the middle values in the drawing and it worked very well. I also did a print from a photograph of a shed door. You get a great deal of detail with this process. Here is a picture of the shed print.
Over the weekend I etched a plate unsing the sun in my back yard. I will take pictures and post soon. If you are thinking about taking a workshop in photopolymer etching I highly reccomend it.

Second Sunday

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="City"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>
Today is Sunday and a week into the month of August. My goal is to post once a month. I exceeded that last month so we will see for this month.

August started out with a bang. My daughter Bethany came to visit for a week. I haven’t seen her in a year and half but we talk on the phone several times a week. It has been three years since my two daughters have been together and I must say it was an excellent week. No arguments and we spent many great hours the three of us together.

Bethany flew in on Friday the 31st and I picked her up at the airport and we left for the North Bay. I dropped her off at her aunts in Sea Ranch and I went up to Mendocino for a workshop in photo polymer etching. It was a great weekend and I spent some time with my ex-sister in law on the way back down to Sacramento.

My younger daughter Lacey took four days off and the two girls hung out together. I t was an excellent week for all. But most importantly I have two beautiful daughters that I love a great deal and spent the last week with them. Life does not get any better.

Next post will be about the workshop. I loved it and plan to do more print making using this technique.

My goal was to update my blog at least once a month and I find now maybe once a week is doable. I will wait and see. I am not changing the goal as yet; but may exceed it.

Since my last blog I spent a long weekend in Mendocino with my Swell Sisters. It was our summer retreat. Retreat is an interesting word and I may have thought that the weekend would be spent together discussing or collaborating on art. However I think retreat to the others meant to to just get away with women friends.

I discovered at this weekend that I may be in the wrong woman's group. Not because the women are not wonderful and accepting: they truly are very accepting. It is because they are so much younger than I am. Most are in their thirties and forties and I am in my sixties. Once we move beyond art as a topic or interest I am lost. Perhaps it is me and I am feeling my age.

I think we go a long time and don't think about our age even though we look in the mirror everyday. Then we are in a situation and it hits us in the face. I am not ready to drop out of the group; but perhaps limit my participation.

Enough thinking. Mendocino is beautiful. If I could move there tomorrow I would. I like the coolness of the day and the big fire at night. (no heat in the 1850's house) Interestingly I had never been to Mendocino until June 20th when I went to the Art Center there for a workshop. I am going again the first weekend in August for a workshop. Three visits in three months. Maybe that is a sign.

Saturday

Today is Saturday and of course I am off work. I word for the state and will be furloughing two days a month starting next month. We are a little behin=d many of the other state folks. The CSU put it off and can't any longer. We are almost 600 million le4ss in funding than the previous year. It is bad. the campuses are not accepting any more students for spring (or winter for those on the quarter system). I try not to think about it because I have not control. Why worry about what I cannot control.

On a lighter note: I went to Port Townsend last April and it was beautiful. I actually went for an Art Fest put on each year by Teesha and Tracy Moore. Three days of workshops and we stayed at the fort for four nights. Too Cool! Very basic accommodations but so much fun. Like being in the college dorm. The woman across from me was from Norway, two doors down they were from Canada and I met a woman from Ashland Oregon on the way up. We all had a wine social at night with show and tell about our workshop we participated in that day. I hope to go again next spring We will see if I can afford it. I think it is very affordable for what you get; however if you don't have the money then nothing is affordable.

July Beginning

I am baaaack! Where have I been? I really don’t know. I haven’t been blogging that is for sure.

I just felt I didn’t have anything to say on a regular basis. I don’t consider myself a writer or a chatterer. I am not the person that walks up to strangers and carries on a conversation. This is not to say that I do not communicate because I do.

I guess it boils down to the fact that I do not consider myself interesting enough to blog about ME. However I am trying to change my attitude about myself.

So is blogging doable? Yes: people do it every day.
Am I capable? Sure: I am physically able to type and spell words.

I have decided at this point to at least update my blog once a month. I know die hard bloggers out there are saying “A MONTH!” However that is the minimum and when I do more than I have exceeded my goal. That is a great motivator I think.

Anyway here goes: recently I have been concentrating my art on print making. I took a beginning print class in the fall of 08. We started with linoleum cuts and I really like the reductive cut process; however the printing part is where I really need the practice. I also got involved with spray paint and stencils. (I am still not sure how that related to print making in a print class.) I love the variety art allows us and plan to continue spray painting in the future. I am not keen on the toxicity of the paint and fumes; however I like the process.

I really think process is the key. If you don’t like the process you won’t continue.

I took a print lab class and it was basically independent study. The group was very diverse in print making and I was able to get a lot of good information and help from others in the class. I love the synergy in an art class and I was introduced to wood cuts, silk screen, etching, collagraphs, and monotype. I felt like I needed to be a sponge in the class because there is so little print making being done in the Sacramento area. At least that I can find.

I am continuing with collagraphs and monotype at home and want to do more dry point etching. There is just not enough time in the day.

Well it has been two months and no blogging. What is up with that? The last two months have been busy. I had some work showing at the Marco Fuoco Gallery in Sacramento in the months of November and December. It was the first time I showed my work in a real gallery.

The month of December was the Swell Sister Show at the Coffee Garden in Sacramento. We had a great time at the 2nd Saturday reception with music and great munchies. The sister’s work was very varied and wonderful. We hope to show as a group again this year. I painted new shoes for the event. Pink!

January (2nd Saturday)I had three pieces at Body Tribe for the non-profit organization Born Free USA; AVES Show. Very busy night with two other sisters were showing independently across town. Sacramento is a great place for art. You can always find something you like OR don't for that matter.

I go back to school in a couple of weeks and am looking forward to spending time in the print lab on campus. This will be independent study in the studio. I am looking forward to it.

That brings us up to date. I am doing some work on paper. I am trying to get back to drawing more. I feel I have drifted off somehow. Many of my Swell Sisters are doing a 30/30 show. Thirty pieces in 30 days. I decided not to do the show at this time although I am trying to do the 30 pieces. Keeps you working if nothing else. I will post pictures soon.

Maybe in 2009 I will actually sell something.

New Month

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="City"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>

Beginning of the month and the year is almost over. This year has gone fast I think. A lot for me has changed. I have made some new friends and drifted away from old friends. Not so much drifted as dropped off. We all try to keep ourselves motivated and going forward. It may be dreams, or ideas, or activities that create that motivation. Hopefully whatever it is for you it can be shared with a friend. That is the best thing in the world.

Friendship is some what like a marriage in that it has to be nurtured. If one person in the relationship has to work harder (or thinks they work harder) than the other then it tends to fall apart. Friends make time for each other. I guess I am destined to have but a few friends at any one time. When I make plans: I make them with that person or persons. I prefer small groups of people I know perhaps not well; but I am comfortable with and can talk to. I have never been comfortable talking to people I do not know at all.

I guess at this age not much will change and I have decided that friendship needs to be a partnership of give and take. And more importantly when time is set aside to get together and visit that it should be considered a commitment with enough value that it is kept. I guess value is the operative word here. In friendship one must feel their value in the relationship.

I am off to San Diego next week on business and next Saturday I will have some of my art in a group show. Yes I am excited; however I am trying to keep a low profile. It is my first show and I am not sure how it will all turn out. Fortunately another artist in the group show is a friend of mine and that is a bit calming. We will stand around and look goofy together (sorry Janet).

I am hoping to take pictures and post. Actually the last two pieces in the “Lil Monster” series I created I didn’t get pictures taken. I will take them at the gallery. I am also scheduled to paint a mural on the bathroom wall of a friend. I was supposed to go over yesterday; however both she and her husband had a cold. Last Thursday I met with my quirky art group and the meeting was art to wear. We were asked to bring a pair of canvas shoes to paint. When you wear your shoes you are showing your artwork to the world around you. Anyway that is the premise.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to paint; however I decided since it was SHOES I wouldn’t think about it. It is not like I am going to prom or to an inaugural party. SO I just started painting and decided to use lots of color. I tend to limit my color palette and decided these needed to be fun.

Half way through I thought that I would never wear them since they looked like something a 12 year old would wear; however I find them quirky and fun. Wow and it was from the "Quirky Art Group" with the Swell Sister Society. Interesting!

I wore them to the grocer store today. I can honestly say I don’t know if anyone looked at them because I forgot they were on my feet. I guess feeling stupid will not be an issue.

I really like the idea of wearable art. One of a kind pieces of clothing. It is something I would like to explore more. Yeah....Like I really have time right now. BUT I will file it for later. I am thinking that a ball cap would be fun and it would be a little more visible than shoes. At any rate I think it was a great experiment and I enjoyed it. AND I will wear them. I am thinking of wearing them to work tomorrow.

Anyone who likes fun and off beat things should think about getting some acrylic paint a pair of canvas shoes (or canvas tote) and make your own statement. I have actually been busy. Go Figure! Work has been pretty crazy. We are setting up our reading conference for November and buying books and contacting with the hotel. I took today off because yesterday was my birthday. Now I know I should have taken yesterday off; however I had a meeting in Sacramento and thought if I have to drive there I might as well go to work. That gave me today off. No driving to Sacramento. I am going up to Cameron Park and have lunch with one of my Swell Sisters Janet.

Anyway........... "Happy Birthday to me."

The Swell Sisters meeting was great last night. We had another Sacramento woman artist speaking about her art. She has a great sense of humor and it was very enjoyable. Her name is Gioia Fonda and she started her own holiday called Pink Week, fifteen years ago.

Per Gioia the second week of November is the week that we should celebrate Pink in all it’s glory. The holiday is to get people aware of color. However if you love green than you wear green all week etc.

Gioia is co-owner of the Tangent Gallery in Sacramento http://www.tangent-gallery.com/ and the Pink show opens on the 2nd Saturday in November.

I have been taking a basic print class at CSU Sacramento and here are some pictures. I know some out there in web-land will think these are primitive and mediocre and they would be right; however it is new skill I am learning. It keeps me in the classroom with young college students and at 62 it is invigorating because I do not understand them at all until we discuss art. Then we can all connect. We started with corks (wine and champagne), erasers, potato (the hardest by far), and we graduated to the EZ Cut which is like eraser material rolled out flat and about 5X7.

The first picture is of the corks and eraser and the second is my first print that I actually cut. I really don’t think it is to bad. I like the cutting part....the printing not so much. I really need to work on that since it is a print class.

Have a GREAT weekend!

Quote for the day: Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after. - Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Work In Progress

I was hoping to sleep in today. Unfortunately that was not the case. I was out late last night at the 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Sacramento. I didn’t get home until almost <st1:time minute="0" hour="0">midnight</st1:time>.

It was really fun. I met my Swell Sisters at the Verge for the 2nd Annual Circus Show. The Circus Show was sponsored (or co sponsored) by Gale Hart a Sacramento artist and animal rights activist. All the proceeds were donated to animal rights programs. It was fun with great art, great people, live entertainment, and carny games.

Then we were off to see a collaborative show that one of our sisters was showing in. She did great and sold everything I believe. Good going Laurelin.

Sacramento was crazy last night so many people out. I am not a crowd person normally; but it was fun. I am not sure how anyone sees all of the art shows in one night.

Yesterday I started some new pieces. I am back to assemblage for some reason. I promised myself I had to vacuum before I could get into the studio. I had to take the dang machine a part to change the belt. I hope it lasts as long as the last one!

So far this has bee a great weekend. That is becoming a habit. Maybe I stay younger that way and only age half as fast. Interesting thought don’t you think?

On Sunday at the St. Ambrose Guild meeting we painted the dags on the pavilion. Yes friends I took pictures. And you say “Yippeeee.” I will also take pictures at the Folsom Renaissance Faire to see how it looks once it is up.

When I arrived at the home of a friend that stores our pavilions I saw that the pavilion was actually up. I though we would have to stand on ladders to paint the dag. The pavilion is 8 or 9 feet tall….at least at the bottom of the dag. The top is probably 15 feet maybe. After asking a few politically correct questions (not my strongest trait) I discovered it was only up to dry out from the Golden Gate Renaissance Faire. Yes friends that faire was a very drippy wet cold affair. Just like northern England and after 90 to 100 degrees here in Sacramento it was very invigorating. Sorry I digress.

Here are pictures of the ladies painting the dags on the pavilion with a wonderful Tudor Rose. I made the stencils and we are saving them to complete the painting. We only finished the front and one rose on each side. The best news is that we will never wonder again which is the front of the pavilion top.

Also the men were painting the portable car garage (not sure what you call it) something other than shiny silver. We use the car garage behind the pavilion as a storage area and dressing room. That allows the full use of the pavilion for chairs and tables AND to keep out of the sun.

The day went pretty fast once we started and with a potluck in between it was a very nice Sunday in deed. Been so busy. I was back at work this week and sometimes after a vacation you have twice as much work at before. Well I was overwhelmed. It was a short week and didn't really feel like it. It seems like there is not enough time. Gosh it seems I say that a lot.

Today I made stencils for my Renaissance Acting Group. The stencil is of the Tudor Rose and we are going to paint the dags on the pavilion before Folsom Faire.

I agreed to make the stencils because after the meeting tomorrow, and after the pot luck, and after a couple of beers it needs to be as easy as possible. No really it is so we can get done in a reasonable time and make it look uniform. I am going to try to remember my camera and take pictures. The pavilion top will only be on the ground so better pictures will have to be taken at the Folsom Faire.

I also worked on my Swell Sister collaborative projects. Actually one is a skull I worked on by myself so I am not sure where collaboration comes in. (see the above picture) I am actually quite pleased with the look. I may have trouble giving it back. The large skull was made by my sister Jennifer out of sugar. She passed it on to me to paint. I was afraid it would melt; but I kept the paint minimal and realistic.

It was to hot to work in the yard; but I did water today since I cannot water again until Tuesday. We are in a stage 2 water alert here in Folsom. I also cleaned the kitchen floor, did laundry and I would have vacuumed; however that machine seems to have a broken belt.

Have a great weekend.

Quote for the day: Avoiding the phrase “I don’t have time...”, will soon help you to realize that you do have the time needed for just about anything you choose to accomplish in life. -Bo Bennett

Back

I am back from vacation. I believe wood burning is now called pyrographics or something very similar. I know as a kid I did some wood burning; however this was great fun. I burned the outside of the gourd with a design and then stained it with leather dye. Now I know why people talk about the Gourd Festival in Folsom. The gourds must be amazing since I think mine are and I am novice. I am going to the gourd festival this fall to check out the artists that do this work all the time. One more day of work and I am off until after Labor Day. Yippee. Now.....I would love to say I am taking all this time off to paint; but I can’t. I am off to Twain Harte for a girlfriends only weekend. Girlfriends I haven’t spent real time with in a long time. Back on Sunday then off to Tahoe camping.

Sacramento County has a summer camp in the El Dorado Forest just below Tahoe. The last two weeks of August are senior camp. Yes friends I am a senior. We sleep in cabins and eat in the dining hall and have workshops during the day. It is really very pleasant. I take my art supplies and draw or just read a book.

The reason I bring this up is I may not get a chance to post until Friday the 29th. And you say “Oh Well So What.” Well shame on you. This blog is riveting right?

Enough about my vacation see the attached picture of my on going project called "little boxes.” True to my nature they are re-used cigarette boxes. I am trying to make them really durable so I have a proto-type in my back pack. It is wearing well. Well I had a very busy weekend. Saturday I was at Folsom’s new dog park for opening ceremonies with city officials and all manner of political folk. The dogs were so good. We had a few hundred for the first day and they ranged from the extra large to the teeny tiny; but they all got a long. Why can’t we do that? Inquiring minds want to know.

Sunday was off to San Francisco to the Golden Gate Renaissance Faire. It was definitely a bit chilly there. We had drizzle in the morning and it was cold all day. However it is a really nice faire with a good selection of guilds and vendors. The food could have a bit more variety and more than one coffee vendor; but all in all a good show. I give it two thumbs up.

Now that that is over I can concentrate on my painting. The Swell Sisters have a show opening in December on 2nd Saturday. If you are reading this and not at all familiar with Sacramento, let me tell you we have an art scene here. Yes a real art scene. Every month on the 2nd Saturday all of the galleries open their new shows with some sort of reception. Some folks in town make it a mission to visit as many galleries, in that one night, as possible. However I wait and go after a week or so. I prefer to see the art not the back of someone’s head. Crowds are not my thing.

Now I can concentrate on what I want to show with the sisters. I am jazzed. I also started another collaborative project with my sisters and will post as they come along.

Quote for the day:
I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. Not sure what is up with that.

Oh yes I know. I have been at work all day and meetings in the evening. That pretty much uses up my time. I haven’t even had a chance to paint. I might need a sick day to feel better.

The Folsom Dog Park opens on Saturday and we are getting the last minute details together for the grand opening ceremonies. The committee has no idea how many people will show up with their dogs for the event. I haven’t been a part of the Folsom Independent Dog Owners (FIDO) for very long; however I am told that this dog park took eight years to complete. We may have 50 people or 500. It should be interesting.

My Swell Sister Society is meeting tomorrow and we have a speaker from a gallery in Sacramento. We are also ending the collaborative art project "Indi 1” and starting “Indi 2.” The project involves several artists that start a piece of work and pass it on to another artist to work on. We continue to pass the pieces until all have worked on each of them. I thought the process would be easy; however after several people have worked on a piece it becomes more difficult to make changes. The finished pieces I think are amazing. I will take pictures tomorrow of Indi 1 and post.

Well that is it for now. I still need to get back into the studio before I explode.

Quote for the day:
“Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.” – Andre Gide

Back to Work Tomorrow

Sunday evening and the weekend is over. Where did it go? All day yesterday I as at a St. Ambrose Guild meeting. We are going to paint the scallops on the pavilion, at the next meeting, so I volunteered to make the stencil.

On the way home I stopped at a thrift store. I had a little fun looking to find things to recycle. Unfortunately nothing grabbed me and I saved money.

Today I went to the Antique Faire or is it the Vintage Faire? It is under highway 50 and 21st on the 2nd Sunday of the month. What fun to see all kinds of things and what people are willing to pay. Again I looked for things that interested me visually. Here I did spend a little hard earned cash. I found some really old curtain rods that look like spears, a stamp for Sheila in Swell Sisters. Also a window latch that was painted white at one time and is now all scratched off. I plan to use it in an assemblage in the future. I found some very little Hans Christina Andersen books and the best of all is the cow vertebrae. Yes girls and boys vertebrae. I thought the shape was so interesting that I bought three. I think I will hang them on my deck in some way. It certainly will be a conversation piece.

I found some wonderful things that would be great in the studio for organizing (ex. an oak library card file); however I don’t really have the room. My house is very small.

The friends I went with today want me to paint a small mural in their bathroom. I will take a picture and post when it is done.

Well it is back to work tomorrow and I did not paint at all this weekend. However it was a good weekend with friends and those are rare are they not?

Quote for the day:
"When you choose your friends, don't be short-changed by choosing personality over character." – Somerset Maugham

Almost Friday

As you can guess Friday’s at 5 pm are my favorite time. I am off work and on the light rail home. But today is only Thursday and I am at work waiting for Friday.

I had a productive day yesterday. I painted on my newest piece called “forgiveness” and it is a bit of a political piece. I am struggling with not enough OR not obvious enough politics in the piece. Maybe I am too chicken and afraid to be right up in your face. I struggle because if the content is not strong enough no one will get it.

I took a break from the little boxes to do this piece. I need to get back to them since they are so easy and fun. It gives me a lift to accomplish them. I have a couple of other pieces in mind; but need to finish my current work first.

Thought for the day:
"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death." - Thomas Paine 1776

For those of you that have forgotten your history: 1776 was the Revolutionary War or War for Independence. Interesting thought for today. We don’t call them a war anymore now do we?

Wednesday Already

I had Monday off to take care of some things that needed to be done. I had the oil in my car changed and the car washed. It is now a happy camper. I don’t’ name my cars like others; however I am sure if it had a spirit it is singing right now.

I also renewed my driver’s license with a new picture and a thumb print. Oh Joy! I guess now the FBI will be able to find me with my current picture.

I have been tired for a few days. I am not sure if I am sick or a bit depressed. Probably the latter. I am trying to keep myself up by painting; however that gets a little dark also. I am in the midst of a political piece.

It is a bit depressing how many young men and women we have lost in the war with Iraq (and Afghanistan). It is even more depressing that most people are oblivious to the deaths. It is a world away from our everyday lives unless you are a military family. G.W. makes sure we do not really know how many have died. We have lost over 4,000 men and women so far. That is unconscionable in this day and age. Haven’t we learned anything?

Well enough rambling for today. But think of those serving our country and keep a good thought for them

Thought for the day:
“Wars have never hurt anybody except the people who die." – Salvador Dali

Sorry Salvador; but war hurts everybody, they just don’t know it! It Was Fabulous! She was woman a step out of her time. Her work is wonderful and thought provoking. She had health struggles (some major) her whole life and perhaps that gave her the strength to go against the norm. Great show!

I went with five of my Swell Sisters and we had a wonderful time. After the Kahlo exhibit we went to Scraps. Oh My Gosh! If you like to recycle in your art this is the place for you. Many people would see it as the ultimate junk store (actually trash). I felt like I had gone to recycled heaven. I have so much stuff already I had to contain myself. Not easy to do when I am around other peoples cast offs. I almost bought two stretcher frames for canvas; however there wasn’t enough room in the car. Sigh! Next time maybe.

I did spend a whopping $3 for my treasures. I am so jazzed about the zipper pulls and don’t have a clue what I am going to do with them. Yes zipper pulls. Not zippers! Just pulls! I also picked up some cool gold paper and I am anxious to see how it works with different mediums. I love the adventure of creating art. Especially since I make it for me! The best thing I found is a blank book that barks when you open it. That will become a book about my little dog Sadie. How fun is that?

AND then we went to the Dick Blick Art Store in Berkeley. What a day for a bunch of crazy artists. I did pick up some canvas to stretch. Man I wish I could have bought the stretcher frame. Next Time!

Well off to do the mundane chores around the house and then to the studio to paint.

Quote for the day:
“A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil; but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often – just to save it from dying out completely”. – Pam Brown

I really need to contact a couple of old friends!

Friday At Last

Yes in deed it is Friday at last. I was at the Folsom Thursday night market last night and it was really hot. I normally do not complain about the heat; but last night the sweat just poured down. Every once in a while the breeze would come up and we would get some relief.

Ah-Natural AC: wind on sweat. Gotta love it!

I was out with FIDO again helping spread the word about the new dog park opening in Folsom. The park is close to my house and right now I drive a bit to get to any dog park. My little dog loves to run and play with the other dogs and the socialization is great. We have the big opening on August 16th.

A couple of extra volunteers showed up so I left early. I thought to my self that I could go back to the house and either take the dog out for a walk or continue to paint on my current projects. (yes more than one)

Neither happened! I was so tired I sat in the big chair and dozed off with Sadie in my lap. I know the TV was on and I can’t tell you what I watched.

I am so glad today is Friday and I have three days off. Yes three! I am taking Monday off to get my car serviced and my driver’s license renewed. My days are so exciting…be still my heart.

Tomorrow is the SF MOMA with a few of my Swell Sisters. We are going to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit. I am so looking forward to the trip that I am even willing to get up early on a Saturday.

Quote f or the day:
It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. – Confucius (551 BC – 479 BC)

Great Day in the Neighborhood

Today I missed the 6:30 am light rail to work. I don’t know what I was doing this morning to lag behind. I thought about driving; but gas is still too high to drive when I can take public transportation. I’ll save my gas for the things I want to do instead of work.

I was scheduled to go to a meeting last night for the opening of the dog park in Folsom. I really did not want to go; but it is sooooo close to home and a very short meeting I decided to “just do it.” Well the meeting was cancelled and when I saw the note on the door I was very happy to be going home again. All of this took maybe 10 minutes. It was great to go back home and to continue painting my current project. I need a day with more than 24 hours in it.

“Little boxes” is the current project. It is painted recycled cigarette boxes. I love to recycle trash into art. They all have a modern art feel. No subject since I am just looking for composition in the small scale. The project is actually fun with no redeeming political or social value. Hey we can’t protest all of time right?

I do have an idea for a political piece in a recycled wooden box; however I need to be in the right mood before I start. I will have to start watching CNN or some other news channel to get me fired up. I need to check in ans see what our politicians are doing or actually NOT doing.

Yep that is how my life is going right now. Not bad at all.

AND two more days until I visit Frida at the SF MOMA.

Quote for the day or actually definition for the day:

Definition of Politics: "Poli" in latin meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "blood-sucking parasites." – Anonymous

Pessimist? This last weekend I accomplished more than I thought I would. That always makes me feel great because I usually accomplish less.

I am setting my sights on a more doable list of jobs each weekend. That way the boring “have to” jobs get done as well as the fun jobs.

And…… I know you are thinking there are no “have to(s)” only “want to(s).” I agree with that; but when it gets to the point that you can grow potatoes on my kitchen floor it truly becomes a “have to” to clean it.

I have a small dog and two inside cats. Although you don’t see much animal hair the word out is “don’t sit on the furniture with a black shirt or pants.” I always warn people about the animals. You need to love animals to come to my house. I vacuum; but not enough.

On the flip side of “have to” I did some art work this weekend and I am quite pleased with myself. I need to take pictures and I will post the work. I also took my dog to the dog park for a small dog meet up. There were about 30 small dogs running around doing what dogs do. It was a beautiful Sunday morning in the park with a slight breeze. I almost didn't go because I wanted to paint; however Sadie needs to be with other dogs on a regular basis to keep her social skills with other dogs. Now I need to push those social skills with other humans.

Quote for the day: To accomplish great things, we must dream as well as act. - Anatole France (1844-1924)

Good quote don't you agree?

Today is Friday and I love Fridays the best.

I got a call from my older daughter this morning. It seems that the last few days just got a way from me.

After working 40 hours as well as trying to paint and patch my bathroom, and trying to do some landscaping in the backyard. (Trying is word here.) There does not seem to be enough time to paint.

How do others manage to find the time to do all of the great art work I see and still do everything else in their lives? I guess I am just not organized enough OR my priority at the moment is not my artwork.

Perhaps that is what makes a professional artist: people that do art as a priority over all else. I will have to think about that. I am sure it is not that simple.

Quote for the day:
Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. I was so busy over the weekend. I put a border around the two trees in the backyard and this weekend I wanted to lay the mulch. Oh My Gosh! Mulch bags are heavy. What was I thinking? I think I am still 30 or 40 and no way picking up 50 pound bags of the stuff is easy. ARGHH. Need less to say I wore myself out. Lucky for me the weather stayed in the 80's.

I really need to think these things out in the future. The only good thing is while I was recuperating from gardening I was painting. Now that is what I am talking about in "thinking things out. "

Here is a piece in progress and it will reflect something to do with the fires we've had here in California. Not sure how yet. This morning I was able to put flea treatment on one of two wild cats in my backyard. That makes it a good day. If I had gotten both it would be a great day. I try to appreciate the small accomplishments.

Both cats were once house cats when I was doing animal rescue; however with the new dog last year they went out the doggy door never to return. That's really OK since they were wild cats inside my house. They were rescued late in the season and never really became adoptable and that is why I still have them. I had to quit fostering cats since I ended up with so many. All of my cats are rescues that were not adoptable. I feed, I watch and I try to socialize the two outside. I still have one inside. He doesn't want to go out lucky for me.

Here is my current project 'Free Fall" which I think is done. I will have to live with it in plain sight for a while to be sure. I am working on another recyled project (will post some pictures soon) as well as the Swell Sister Indi Project is coming to a close. It is all good.

Quote for the day:

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. - John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Amen John

Today is Friday. I need to get back to painting my floppies.

No blogs until Monday.

New Project

Here are some pictures of my new project. I can get through the work day knowing that tomorrow and the next day I do not report to anyone. I guess that is what self employed people like.

Last night I met with a sub group of the Swell Sister Society known as the Quirky Art Group or QAG. One of my sisters in the group said, “all I do is paint”. I looked at her with envy. Then I said, “Wow I wish I had the time; but work gets in the way.” And she said “Quit.” Interesting thought for about one second. No quitting isn’t in my immediate future. Although it was a very nice thought!

I will be 62 in about 3 months and technically I could retire. I guess I could check to see how poor I would be if I did retire. It truly is something to think about and if not this year then when? So thank you Janet for planting the seed. Now I will have to tend that seed to see if it will grow.

The group last night met to work on an art project that we probably would not normally try. In this project you put paper or fabric under glass in a picture frame (any size) which becomes your background. Once you have the background you paint on the glass with black or white acrylic paint. Very cool effect and depending on the depth of the frame it could look 3D.

All of the projects turned out great and very diverse. The best part of the evening was just gabbing with the other sisters about art and anything else on our minds. What a great treat to be in the company of other women of like mind in some aspects and totally different in others. We encourage each other to try new things such as this blog of mine. A week ago I knew noting about blogging. Of course I have much to learn. And yes I am working on displaying pictures of my art.

I am off to Oakland tomorrow for a BBQ with friends. No posts until Sunday. I know you will miss me; but I will be back.

Remember:
You can’t experience success beyond your wildest dreams until you dare to dream something wild. –Scott Sorrell

I am dreaming of painting everyday. Why? I don’t know and don’t care. It is enough to feel good about the day. After my sick day I am rejuvenated.

I started a new project yesterday with old floppy discs. It is amazing to me the changes in technology in a short period of time. Everyone uses CD’s now and sometimes for me that is just to much space. I have a thumb drive (flash drive, portable drive etc.) for transporting documents or pictures. I find it the simplest for me. We’ve made the floppy obsolete. I can remember when the floppy was the only portable document carrier we used…or I used. We always had the zip drive in the offices I worked in: however I still have trouble opening them up. With all of the changes in technology you would think that the zipped files would be opened easier today. Maybe it is just me.

Yesterday when I put 50 or 60 floppies side by side they really made an interesting pattern. Not sure where it will go from here. That is the beauty of art: most of the time it takes on a life of its own. I will post a picture when I finish the piece.......if I ever get the hang of that part of this blog. As you can see my slide show is still not working. And yes I really do make art.

If anyone can really explain a widget I would truly be grateful. I basically know what it does; however I do not know how to enter the widget code into my layout. Sigh. I am not as techno savvy as I thought I was. I will keep trying.

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. -Thomas Edison

Thanks Tom I will remember that while I continue to wrestle with widgets.

Quote for the day:
There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.
-Pablo Picasso

I agree. Well not sick in the true sense of the word; however I am taking a sick day. I have been having trouble sleeping at night. I wake up at all hours not knowing why. Today I woke up at 2 am and could not go back to sleep. What is up with that?

Once awake my mind starts to wander and I start thinking about stupid things: Did I take meat out of the freezer? Did I turn off the garage light? Did I send that email at work? All of which do not need an answer at 2 am. If I was solving world peace maybe 2 am is a good time to be up. Although I have some ideas about world peace…. I will never solve it.

I should probably go to the doctor; however I always wait until I think I have a brain tumor: meaning excruciating pain. I am 61 and take no regular mediations and feel quite proud of that.

Last September I was considered morbidly obese. Now the word obese is enough to give one thought and when you add morbidly it becomes overwhelming. And that is just what I thought. Even though my numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol etc) were in range, they were at the higher end. The arthritis in my knees was killing me and I thought there is no way I can work past 62. I will have to retire. All of that has changed and I am now just overweight. And you say JUST. Hey… after morbidly obese, overweight is great. I am working toward in range (normal) for my height. My knees are so much better and I can walk my dog around the block. I won’t be able to take long hikes anymore; however I get up in the morning and feel reasonably well. I am a happy camper today.

On a completely different subject; I am in the process of a collaborative art piece with my Swell Sister Society (women in the arts since 08). We each start a piece and pass it to the next sister to work on, and so on, and so on…………. until it comes back to me. What fun. I will do a show and tell when it is finished.

Is my life sad? Not today!

Quote for the day:
Only I can change my life. Why? I do not have a clue. I have a lot going on right now that I am interested in. That is a change for me. I have a couple of art pieces I am working on and a collaborative piece I just started.

The collaborative piece I think will be interesting. I meet some creative women about a month ago that are all interested in art and we are known as the Swell Sister Society. I never would have started this blog if not for a member of the group. Thanks Janet! We sisters come together with a common interest in art and we support and inspire each other. We have about sixty six members in the group with some more active than others. We are from different backgrounds, all ages and doing all types of art. One thing we have in common is creativity. That is awesome. As another sister says “Swell Sisters Rock. “

So I am blogging now, trying to figure out how to post my art work and resize photos for the net. My sisters have given me the confidence to do all of these things. Today I am thankful for finding this wonderful group of women. Ain’t Life Grand!

Is my life sad? Well it is back to work. UGH! It is not that I don't enjoy what I do. It is just that I would rather be doing other things. Right now I am in the middle of two art pieces and would like to stay home and work on them; however I cannot.

On Myday I mentioned that I was meeting some folks I did not know at an art gallery. I went to the gallery and while waiting in the lobby I noticed another person standing alone and asked if she was with the meet up group and she was. We were both new and had never been to the other meets and tried to make conversation.

One of the hardest things for me is to talk to people I do not know. I have always envied people that walk into a room and start talking to anyone (about anything I might add) and they seem to be enjoying the converstation. How do the do that?

We found another person waiting for the meetup and then there was three of us. We all showed up at 11 am and by 11:15 am we were wondering where everyone else was. Did we get the time wrong? Are we the only ones to show up? We decided to take a look around the gallery at the "Nude Exhibit" and of course the other permanent pieces and see if anyone else showed up. I wandered the musem and saw the exhibit and then I left. Sorry Maral and Jody for not sticking around.

I am in the middle of two art pieces (more on that to come) and re-doing my bathroom (more on that I am sure) and as much as I love art galleries other things were on my mind.

Is my life sad? This is my first blog ever. YIKES! My new friend Janet turned me on to this site and told me it was easy. Perhaps. But what do I say to the world at large? Who cares what I think? I can't answer these questions yet. Maybe one day I will.

Today is Sunday. I really like sundays. Why? you ask. Well.....it really is my down day. Although I would love to have more days called Sudnay I only get one. I try to do all of the things I want to do for myself on Sunday. Which should be called Myday.

Today I am going to the Crocker here in Sacramento to look at a nude exhibit. I can't tell you who the artist(s) is. It really doesn't matter. What is different about today is I am meeting people at the gallery I have never met before. My best friend lives two hours away and needless to say we do not see each other as often as we would like. I don't have a lot of friends and especially ones that enjoy wandering around art galleries. So I turned to the internet.

On the internet there is a place called Meet Up. You can search in your area and find different groups that meet based on a common interest. Today I am joining a Meet Up Group that likes to visit galleries.
